The Best Things in my Brain, July 2025
I’ve always been a person who loves to learn and find new things and share them with others, but these things don’t always warrant a full blog or social media post. So I thought I’d play around with offering a short and sweet post on the best things I learned, read, heard, or saw recently. This will run once a month on a week I’m not scheduled to post a longer blog.
This month’s craft Thing will not be a surprise if you get the newsletter and know I’ve been on a bit of a sewing kick lately. (And if you didn’t get the newsletter – it’s not too late, sign up before the end of the month and you’ll still get this month’s edition.)
Best Thing in my Brain, Craft Edition:
I put my very first zipper in a sewing project! I also did it mostly by hand because I don’t own a zipper foot and because I was using a zipper from my stash that was originally a separating zipper. So I needed two extremely helpful sewing tutorials:
This blog from Sâcotin on how to turn a separating zipper into a non separating one – way easier and quicker than you might think!
This blog from The Daily Sew on sewing zippers in by hand (with great internal reference links to how to do the stitches she mentions in those instructions).
The zipper is going in a skirt I made for a friend’s Summerween themed birthday party, which means I’ve hit another one of my 2025 Crafting Goals (sewing an item of clothing), so more on that in a future post.
Best Thing in my Brain, Non-Craft Edition:
I’ll be honest, it’s been a rough time to exist in the world outside of my cozy little craft community bubble. So this small act of kindness by a neighbor to share her hydrangea blooms with the block really brightened my day:
Sorry for the photo quality - my husband took this when he was walking to the store because he knew I’d be interested.
If you can’t read the full sign, she included tips on what to do to keep the blooms healthy in a vase (which I didn’t really need as a fellow gardener, but a person who likes to give helpful tips is a person after my own heart). My backyard hydrangea is not this luscious, so I happily took a couple blooms to enjoy in the house for a while.
Now I’m pondering whether I should do this myself the next time my mini monstera plant needs pruning (I’ve run out of friends who want my propagated plants).
