Tech Editing and Pattern Layout Services

Why Should You Hire Me As Your Tech Editor? See my “About” page.

Packages Include

  • Free Initial meeting to discuss your style/editing preferences (this can be email or Zoom depending on your preference and schedule)

  • In depth revisions with annotated document (for most clients this is one or two rounds), focusing on accuracy and legibility of pattern instructions, including simple style sheet formatting, math and size grading checks, and clarity of written instructions. I am familiar with working in Word, PDF, and Google Docs (although if you use the latter I will work on my edits offline before returning them to you in the Docs format).

  • Free final once over of pattern right before publishing (to check that all tech editing suggestions were incorporated).

  • For Design Layout packages, final template will come with Layout Style Sheet noting all graphic elements, font styles, colors, etc. so you can easily adapt it for each new pattern. (Please note I use InDesign CC for development of layout templates, but will return a final pdf as well as the full InDesign files, so you do not have to have InDesign on your own computer.)

Note: where pattern page counts are indicated, page counts include all written instructions including gauge, materials, abbreviations, schematics, and charts, but do not include any cover pages or pages with only photos, unless I am assessing those pages as part of a layout package. If you aren’t sure what package your pattern is best suited for, email me for a quote and the current rate sheet.

What I Edit

  • Knitting patterns, especially hats or hand accessories, socks, toys, and housewares (blankets, pillows, dishcloths, tea cozies, etc.) and pullover sweaters and cardigans. I particularly enjoy colorwork and/or textured stitch patterns (including cables).

  • Patterns that need colorwork or stitch charts created or edited — this can be with or without a tech edit. I do offer crochet chart creation even though I do not currently tech edit crochet patterns.

  • Patterns that need schematic drawings created or edited — with or without a tech edit.

  • Patterns in multiple sizes as long as the initial grading math has already been done (I’m great at checking other people’s math, not so great at generating it myself).

  • Romance — my background is in creative writing, I’m happy to help edit or even do a coaching session on creating the romance “flavor text” for a pattern.

What I Don’t Edit

  • Crochet patterns (I’m still a beginner at crochet and want to understand it better before I take on editing patterns).

  • Patterns that need additional sizes graded by the tech editor.

Schematic and Chart Creation

Need a more accurate schematic or a clearer chart? This package includes creation of a schematic/chart, up to two revisions, and providing final file in an image file type that can be easily inserted into your design template. Pricing may vary depending on the complexity of the line drawing or size of the chart needed.

I do offer crochet charts and schematics!

Style Sheet Development

First time designer or don’t have a style sheet of your own? I will walk you through the various questions needed to establish your preferred pattern writing style and produce a finished style sheet that you can use for all future patterns (even if I don’t edit them).

Romance Editing/Coaching

Do you struggle with adding the romance to a pattern — that intro text that will really sell what a pattern is meant to evoke or represent? If you’ve already written the basic text/story/essay and just want some advice on making it better, I can provide editing and suggestions.  If you don’t even know where to start, schedule a romance coaching session – we’ll work through some brainstorming exercises and talk through how to get the story in your head onto the page.

Design Layout Services

Is your pattern template in need of a refresh? Maybe you’re planning a pattern collection and need help fitting all the pieces together? I have nearly 20 years’ experience creating and editing InDesign layouts, including identifying fonts or design resources that are free or low-cost, and making sure any resources purchased include the correct licensing.
