FOlio Fest Day 9:The Beeswax Hat

Pattern Name: Beeswax Hat

Designer: Amy van de Laar

Yarn: Elann.com Limited Edition Gentry Tweed (80% wool/10%silk/10%cashmere) (stash from the Ballerina Wrap Jacket)

My Favorite Thing About This Hat: This was a really interesting pattern to knit – the technique to make the “honeycomb” pattern is simpler than it appears but it still requires you to pay attention to what row you are on.  Because the yarn is a wool blend it’s also warm but not TOO warm, making it nice for early fall/late spring.

What I’d Change About This Hat: I knit this right before the Hoopla hat, and I think I was in a period where I was overcompensating *too* much for my head size.  The pattern said it fit up to 24” circumference, and my head is another inch and half bigger, so I went up a needle size, but it still wound up a bit looser than would be ideal. Its design doesn’t lend itself to slouchiness quite as well as the Hoopla hat, so I end up not wearing it as much.

Would I Knit This Again: I definitely would consider taking another crack at this one, I love the stitch pattern!

This Week’s Charity:

Brave Space Alliance is Chicago’s first black-led, trans-led LGBTQ+ center located on the South Side of Chicago dedicated to creating and providing affirming, culturally competent, resources, programming, and services for LGBTQ+ individuals on the South and West sides of the city.

A recent study from the Black Futures’ Lab showed more than 90% of LGBTQ+ respondents named low wages as their biggest problem. Studies and statistics continually show LGBTQ folks as suffering and of that population, Black, Brown, and Indigenous folks bear the brunt of the economic disparity. In partnership with the National LGBTQ Workers Center, the BSA has established the QT Black, Brown, and Indigenous Job Board to connect LGBTQ+ people with good-paying jobs with benefits that are LGBTQ+ friendly, while providing a place for job recruiters to post to make sure they are reaching diverse potential candidates.

Through December 31, the BSA is hosting their Dignity 2 Destiny Peer to Peer Fundraiser.  In support of this effort, all donations made through the WLS Makes Stuff donation page through December 31, 2023 will be matched up to $500.
