FOlio Fest Day 12: The New York Hat Collection
Read other entries in this series here as they are available.
Pattern name: Q-Train Hat (gray), Grand Central Hat (brown), The Avenues Hat (purple)
Designer: Mina Phillips (Knitting Expat on YouTube)
Yarn: Various Knit Picks (Wool of the Andes Tweed and City Tweed DK)
My Favorite Thing about This Hat: I am a big Mina Phillips fan so when she came out with her hat collection, I absolutely jumped on it. I loved that these are very simply constructed hats with textured stitches that liven them up a bit. And as someone who then lived in NYC, I loved the NYC theme (fun fact: the last place Mina and her family lived in NYC was in the same neighborhood as the last place my spouse and I lived in NYC, although I did not realize this until watching some of her older videos, as they moved out right as we arrived).
My intention was to knit all seven hats and I only got through three (although I think I have a fourth one in a project bag somewhere). The brown Grand Central Hat went to a friend as a gift and the other two I’ve been wearing regularly this last year.
What I’d Change about This Hat: Tweed was the wrong choice of yarn for these hats – the business of the yarn buries some of the textured stitches (particularly on the Avenues hat)
Would I Knit it Again? Maybe but I’ll probably tackle the other hats in the collection first!
This Week’s Charity:
Our focus expands to address displaced populations around the world this week. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is on the ground in over 70 countries—providing urgently needed humanitarian aid in moments of crisis and conflict. Funds raised through donations allow them to be able to respond quickly to crises all over the world. You can make donations to their efforts here.
In Ukraine, MSF has been assisting in operation of five hospitals across the country as well as conducting mobile clinics in areas close to the front lines. So far in 2023, MSF's mobile clinics have provided more than 62,000 medical consultations. You can read more about their current work in Ukraine here.
Thank you all of you who have read this far for coming along on my journey through my hat collection! You can always donate to any of the charities featured this month through these links:
Brave Space Alliance (remember all donations made through this link by Dec. 31, 2023 will be matched up to $500!)
